….A Coastal Flood Watch is in effect from Saturday Morning through Saturday Evening for the morning and evening high tide cycles for Cape Cod and the Islands ….

….Hurricane Force Wind Warnings and Storm Warnings are in effect for the Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island coastlines. See Hazardous Weather Outlook for specific areas for coastal warnings….

….Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency’s State EOC and Region Two HQ will be doing a limited activation starting at 7 AM with RACES support….

….Local ARES/RACES Groups should closely monitor the progress of this significant ocean storm and seek advice from local ARES and RACES leadership on any possible activation….

….SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will occur starting at 7 AM Saturday and last through late Saturday Night/early Sunday Morning….

Noel has transitioned into a large and powerful extratropical ocean storm and the National Hurricane Center has issued it’s a last advisory. The storm is now undergoing intensification as an extratropical system and models have tracked slightly further west that previous runs. The strong wind field and heavy rain area will extend well beyond the center of the system. Given this information, High Wind Warnings, Wind Advisories, Flood Watches and Coastal Flood Watches have been issued and this coordination message will detail the various items.

A High Wind Warning is in effect from 6 AM to 9 PM Saturday for Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island . In Southeast Coastal Massachusetts from roughly Mattapoisett to Plymouth , sustained winds of around 40 MPH with gusts to 70 MPH are expected with the peak of the strongest winds expected in the late morning through the afternoon. In the Boston to Providence corridor, sustained winds of 30-40 MPH with gusts to 60 MPH are possible Saturday Afternoon. Winds will be somewhat less farther inland but will still be sufficient to cause wind damage in this area. A High Wind Warning is in effect from 4 AM to 12 AM Saturday for Cape Cod and the Islands . In this area, the potential exists for hurricane force wind gusts with gusts as high as 85 MPH possible across the Outer Cape and Nantucket with sustained winds of 40-50 MPH. Across the upper Cape and Martha’s Vineyard, wind gusts of 75 MPH with sustained winds of 35-45 MPH are likely. In all areas, wind gusts of 40-50 MPH are expected to take hold near or shortly after daybreak.

A Wind Advisory is in effect from 8 AM to 6 PM Saturday for Southeast New Hampshire, Central Massachusetts and North-Central and Northeast Connecticut . In this area, sustained winds of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH are possible with the strongest winds in the late morning to early afternoon hours.

A Flood Watch is now in effect from Saturday Morning through Saturday Evening for Southeast Massachusetts from the Boston area and Norfolk County south and east through Cape Cod and the Islands as well as Rhode Island . In these areas, 2-5” of rain is expected with isolated higher amounts. The heaviest rain will be over the south and east portions of the Flood Watch area. These rains would bring some flooding to rivers and streams but the more significant issue would be urban and poor drainage flooding over the region.

A Coastal Flood Watch is now in effect from Saturday Morning through Saturday Evening for the morning and evening high tide cycles for Cape Cod and the Islands . In this area, seas and winds may be sufficient to result in areas of moderate coastal flooding at the time of high tide. This will be contingent on water buildup in a short period of time for the morning high tide cycle and wind direction for the evening high tide cycle. Areas outside of the Coastal Flood Watch area may see some pockets of minor coastal flooding at the time of the evening high tide cycle.

Hurricane Force Wind Warnings and Storm Warnings are in effect for the Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island coastlines. Mariners should remain in port until this storm has safely passed. See the NWS Taunton Hazardous Weather Outlook for specific areas that are under coastal warnings.

Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency’s State EOC and Region 2 HQ will be doing a limited activation starting at 7 AM with RACES support requested for these facilities. Local ARES/RACES groups should closely monitor the progress of this significant ocean storm and seek advice from local ARES and RACES leadership on any possible activation. Some local town/city EOC’s are going to be active for this significant storm starting Saturday Morning.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will occur starting at 7 AM Saturday and last through late Saturday Night/early Sunday Morning. We will be looking for reports per the SKYWARN reporting criteria from any and all Amateur Radio Operators and SKYWARN Spotters.

11-3-07  5:26 AM

Hello to all…

…..A brief update on the storm situation. The Strongest Winds have been delayed 4-6 Hours. Winds will pick up toward mid-late morning with the strongest winds with the potential for hurricane force winds over portions of Cape Cod and the Islands expected toward mid-late afternoon….

…..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will still start around 7 AM but will be fairly informal until 9-10 AM this morning. Please see Storm Coordination Message #3 for complete data including links for latest watches and warnings.

Storm RADARs and Maps...

June 28, 2007

A brief Mammatus Cloud forms in Mashpee, Massachusetts during the a weakening stage of a Severe Thunderstorm. This storm formed in Central Massachusetts and became severe in Bristol County. SKYWARN Spotters on the 145.490 MHz Acushnet Repeater reported trees down in Seekonk and wind gusts of 71 MPH in Rehoboth. The storm weakened quickly while crossing Buzzards Bay and was rain free moving across Cape Cod. This weather event was part of a strong cold front moving through the northeast replacing three days of 95 degree plus temperatures.

May 31, 2007

While traveling west on the Massachusetts Turnpike into Upstate New York, I crossed a backdoor Cold Front in The Berkshires. A line of thunderstorms formed and moved east along the New York Thruway between Utica and Schenectady at 2 pm. I intercepted the first and largest storm at 4:20 pm. I waited for it's arrival southeast of Albany, New York on Interstate 90 in Hudson. The storm became severe and The Albany National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Rensselaer County, New  York and later for Berkshire County, Massachusetts. The Taunton, Ma. National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for Hampton County, Springfield, Massachusetts area as rotation was seen on RADAR. No touchdown reported. This storm produced lightning strikes every 3 seconds. 2 cloud to ground strikes hit very close to my vehicle. Lightning was so strong, at times I couldn't hear everything the AM 810 WGY announcer was saying. Their 50,000 watt transmitter was only 15 miles away. I reported a wind gust of 68 MPH and small 1 inch Birch Tree branches were down just to the right of my vehicle.

Approaching Severe Thunderstorm entering Downtown Albany, moving east southeast towards my location. Photo taken in Hudson, New York on Interstate 90 (looking northwest). Below, current WXWORX RADAR. The fourth purple square box from the left was my location.

--------

Within 30 minutes, the storm increased in size and strength as seen on the RADAR below. Notice the dust just above the tree line as the downburst is about to hit. A few minutes later, I reported a 68 MPH gust.

Torrential rain, high winds and vivid lightning!

Severe Storm exiting Rensselaer County moving east southeast into Massachusetts. 20 minutes after the storm passed, the ground was completely dry. It was a very humid day. Viewing the storm's southwest quadrant.

Another Severe Thunderstorm later that evening north of Canajoharie, NY. Looking northwest on the NY Thruway. This storm produced hail, cloud to ground lightning and damaging winds in the Southern Adirondacks.

May 16, 2007

After a long mild winter (only 10 inches of snow on Cape Cod), severe weather made it's welcome to the New England area on May 16th! The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma issued the first Tornado Watch for Southern New England. I recently purchased and activated my new Wxworx Mobile Threat Net System and I was anxious to try it for the first time. The system proved to be extremely helpful tracking storms.

When I began my day trip, the weather was sunny, moderate southwest winds and the temperature was 57 degrees. I left the ocean marine air to see severe weather. I targeted the I-495 / Mass Pike area. When I reached Middleboro, Ma, the temp increased to 85 degrees! At the Wrentham exit, it was cloudy and heavy rain soon followed with some lightning, but no hail. I decided to have lunch in Milford (in my vehicle) and observe the severe weather approaching from the southwest. There was a 60 mile wide line of storms so I went to Bellingham. I wanted to take more photos with the squall line approaching, but the sky was obscured due to many hills. Also, this storm system didn't seem to have the punch as it was mostly a rain event. After the first and second line of storms passed, they didn't seem as strong as the RADAR indicated. I had hoped to report hail. There were reports in Worcester and Bristol Counties. No tornadoes were sighted or reported within the watch area.

Bellingham, Ma. Near I-495 Exit Looking South just after first squall line.

Interstate 495 South approaching Interstate 95.Moderate to heavy rain, low winds, no lightning or hail.

Observing the next line of Thunderstorms on Wxworx XM Satellite Weather and Boston's TV Channel 7 that entered the I-495 corridor at 4:30 pm. The only Meso rotation seen on live RADAR was a Severe Thunderstorm in extreme Southwest Connecticut that caused damage beginning in Northern New Jersey.

The first measurable snowfall I recorded was during the February 28-29, 1999 Southern New England Nor'easter. My snow total was 20 inches from West Dennis, Ma., reported to the Taunton, Ma. National Weather Service. The Weather Channel displayed those totals. A 24 inch total was reported by a WCVB Boston TV 5 Weather Watcher in Harwich but it was not an official measurement. After the cold front and low pressure system passed, northeast winds set-up ocean effect snow squalls for another 15 hours leading to highest amounts in the upper and mid Cape Cod areas. Cheryl Lempke and Jill Brown reporting.
